About Institute

Institute of Biological Problems of the North FEB RAS was founded on February 1, 1972, on the basis of the Department of Biological Problems of the North-Eastern Complex Research Institute of FESC ASUSSR.

Over the vast territory of the Far-Eastern North of Russia, IBPN FEB RAS is the only academic institution, which has been carrying out fundamental investigations on different problems of the northern biology more than 40 years. 

Today the Institute conducts investigations, defined by the three basic trends:

  • study of functioning, organization principles and adaptive strategies of the northern populations, communities and ecosystems;
  • study of biological diversity on the territory of the North-East of Asia;
  • development of scientific principles of conservation, reproduction and rational use of biological resources of the North.

On December, 1, 2016 the staff of the Institute consists of 119 person, among which there are 66 researchers: 12 Doctors and 36 Candidates (PhD).

Research subdivisions are represented by 9 Laboratories.

Institute represents a base for Department of Biology and Chemistry of the North-Eastern State University of Magadan. Every year the research staff of IBPN is replenished by graduating students of this Department. A post graduate course was opened by 6 biological specialties. In 2016 one post-graduate student finished intramural tuition by specialty of Parasitology, 03.02.11, another one finished extramural tuition by specialty of Botany, 03.02.01, and one more was accepted for intramural tuition by specialty of Zoology, 03.02.04.

Institute carries out fundamental studies according to 9 program themes of federally-funded research projects. The Institute participates in Federal special purpose program, works over the projects, supported by Russian Fund of Fundamental Investigations and International research funds; collaborates with institutes, universities, and organizations of the USA, Japan, Canada, Finland, Poland and others.

For the last 5 years (2012-2016) researchers of the Institute published over 1000 papers including over 30 monographs.
